The food storage drawer is an excellent place to breakup with single-use plastics. Chemicals in plastic are disrupting our hormones and shedding microplastic particles into everything. Here are some tips to use less with food storage...
- You must try out fabric coated in all natural beeswax! It is so easy to wrap cheese or use instead of plastic wrap to cover dishes. It will stick to itself nicely and is very easy to clean with warm water. Beeswax is naturally antimicrobial, thank you bees!

Matter compostable bags. I have purchased these at Target, initially I thought they were just okay, I loved that I could feel good about putting my kid's food in a bag that didn't have PFAS, BPA, and microplastics. But they were hard to open without tearing the top where you zip them shut, which was a huge flaw.
However, they have recently redesigned them and I just purchased a new box. I am hoping they fixed the tearing and zipping issue. I also hope this brand will continue to improve and circulate in homes, they are also home-compostable now, which is great! I recommend purchasing some, but also I didn't just throw out my boxes of older plastic bags, they are still in my house. Instead of keeping them in the everyday drawer, I store them higher up so I break the habit of using them. I keep old plastic bags as well to reuse (as long as they were not used for food) They can be handy for sorting and storing non edible items.
- Keep Rubber bands, especially from produce, they make it so easy to wrap up packaging and snacks to keep fresh.
- I have been using some silicone reusable storage bags, which have worked well. But new reports indicate these could also shed toxic micro pollutants, at least when baking with them. (sigh) It is very hard to find healthy choices for food consumption isn't it?!?
- I used up a roll of plastic wrap years ago and will never replace it. If I ever even use this wax paper up, it will have the same fate. I have been enjoying my unbleached parchment paper, highly recommend!
- I love the Pyrex glass dishes for leftovers and food storage, but find their plastic lids to be terrible! Anyone have solutions here?
What are your kitchen hacks for less single use plastic with food storage? I would love to know what is working for you.
