Tips to Uncover Greenwashing in Apparel

Tips to Uncover Greenwashing in Apparel
Sustainability is everywhere in fashion, but not every claim means the same thing.  Many brands use words like "eco-friendly" or "green," often without clarity. Greenwashing misleads with labels or statements that sound responsible but aren’t backed by real practices. Even careful shoppers can run into confusing claims, making it difficult to sort thoughtful brands from all the noise. Here are three concrete ways to cut through the clutter and spot brands that live their values.

1. Fiber and Material Sourcing: Brands using natural fibers, like silk, cotton, hemp, or wool, offer real benefits. Blythly's knitwear is never blended with acrylics or polyester; each piece is knit from a single fiber, making it easier to recycle back into fibers at the end of the product's life.  Our cotton and wool have been carefully sourced from Italian companies that have the strictest environmental standards for animal welfare, organic cotton farming, and safe dyeing regulations.

2. Packaging Practices: Look at what goes into the packaging. Blythly ships every order in plastic-free packaging. When brands use recyclable, compostable, or minimal packaging, it says a lot about their priorities.  Our buttons, tags, and labels are plastic free as well!

3. Manufacturing Transparency: Trust builds when a company shares clear details on where and how things are made. Blythly’s products are knit in Brooklyn, New York, and that transparency supports both the environment and local jobs.
Checklist for Your Next Sustainable Purchase:
  • Are the fibers natural and plastic-free, such as cotton, hemp, silk, or wool?

  • Is the packaging free of plastic?

  • Does the brand explain exactly where and how items are made?

  • Are fair labor and low-impact practices part of their story?

  • Is the company considering ways to use circular design in their product?

Use these questions whenever you shop. Small details reveal real values.
